Rees-mogg denies backing German far right as Brexit called a ‘s**tshow’

Jacob Rees-mogg has denied supporting a German farright party after he was criticised for sharing a speech by its leader on social media.

The chairman of the probrexit European Research Group said the address by Alice Weidel of Alternativ­e for Germany (AFD) was of “real importance” because it shows a “German view of Brexit”.

Sharing a clip on Twitter, he commented: “The AFD leader asks ‘is it any wonder the British see bad faith behind every manoeuvre from Brussels?’”

over their stance on race and religion, including calls for “Islam-free schools”.

Labour MP David Lammy accused Mr Rees-mogg of “promoting Germany’s overtly racist party, AFD”.

But the senior Brexiteer insisted he was “not supporting the AFD” and later accused Labour MP Wes Streeting of “jumping to weird conclusion­s” after he called on Mr Rees-mogg to apologise in the House of Commons.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Europe minister launched an unpreceden­ted attack on British politician­s, claiming that “90 per cent” of the Cabinet have “no idea how workers think, live, work and behave”.

Michael Roth, a member of the centre-left SPD, said UK parliament­arians were “born with silver spoons in their mouths” and described Brexit as a “big s**tshow”.
