Turning the tide: Egypt ups efforts to clean ocean as ban considered on single-use plastics
Divers collect plastic and other discarded debris during a cleanup organised by Camel Dive Club, at a site off the coast of the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. Officials in the popular holiday destination said they want to introduce a new raft of legislation banning disposable plastics, prohibiting everything from single-use straws to plastic bags in an effort to fight levels of waste in coastal areas. It is estimated more than 100,000 marine creatures are killed from plastic entanglement or ingestion every year, while less than a fifth of plastic products produced globally are properly recycled.
