Not so civilised
The present situation in Parliament, in which 400 Remainer MPS are stopping the clearly expressed vote by 17.4 million of us to leave the EU, is clearly untenable.
Sandy Coghill (Letters, 2 April) clearly thinks that the Edinburgh parliament holds “civilised and constructive debate”, but, in actual fact, a tiny group of Green MSPS is the tail wagging the Scottish parliamentary dog.
On the other hand, no one else would think that Nicola Sturgeon’s diatribes and avoidance of answering legitimate questions at Holyrood are anything other than an outrage. When I see that head wobble, I know there will simply be another attack on the opposition parties; nothing constructive.
When Mr Coghill holds up the EU Parliament as an “open and controlled” forum, I must admit that I laughed, because, unwittingly, he got it spot on. “Controlled” is the word. It is controlled by the unelected Commissioners who tell it what to enact and who are totally unaccountable for their actions.
I profoundly disagree with Parliament asking for our decision on Brexit and then actively conspiring to confound it. It is a denial of democracy when the people were asked to decide whether or not to leave the EU.
The good thing is that these MPS will be held to account by the people at the next election and somehow we will achieve the Brexit we voted for. Our democracy is in a time of redrawing of parties’ lines.
Westminster may not be perfect, but it is better than all the other systems.
