They had to wait 693 days to move into their new stadium, so Tottenham’s supporters did not mind waiting 55 minutes more for Heung-min Son to christen it with a first goal.

A first strike, a first win – 2-0 against Crystal Palace in front of just over 59,000 fans – and though there will be many more firsts, none will be much bigger, only if – when? – Spurs parade the first major trophies here, in the years to come. That is the plan, anyway.

Had Spurs fans been able to pick who they wanted to mark the historic moment then Son would have been high up their lists as first goalscorer. The popular South Korean received the ball from Christian Eriksen then unleashed a shot which took a huge deflection on its way into the net.

Eriksen made it 2-0 with ten minutes remaining. Harry Kane appealed for a penalty under a challenge from James Mcarthur but the ball fell to Eriksen to tuck away from close in.
