Wildcard Stewart wins epic tussle

Wildcard Rory Stewart battled through a 70-minute epic to book his place in today’s second round of the Springfiel­d Scottish Open.

Stewart, a 22-year-old from Perth, defeated Finland’s Miko Aijanen 10-12, 11-5, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7 and today faces fourth seed Bernat Jaume from Spain in the Profession­al Squash Associatio­n Challenger 10 event at Oriam on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Chris Leiper and Fergus Richards both battled hard but lost out in four sets to Matias Tuomi of Finland and Jordan’s Muhammed Alsarraj respective­ly.

Meanwhile, No 1 seed Alan Clyne will face England’s Stuart Macgregor after the latter beat Robert Downer in five sets.

In the women’s event, Scots Georgia Adderley and third seed Alison Thomson meet today in round two after the former beat England’s Alicia Mead three sets to nil.
