More referenda!

-

As my 90th year edges ever closer, I selfishly find great comfort in the current parliamentary chaos. The Brexit betrayal by our “only democratic when it suits us” servants of we, their referendum result-respecting majority masters, is the bitter end.

It sounds the death knell of the present and now discredited political system. It confirms the growing belief that Great Britain, as an early flowering democratic polity, is, thanks to excellent communications and a good standard of free and universal education in place, now again ready to take the world lead with the next evolutionary stride forward in self- governance.

The days of living within a “representative democracy” have passed. Had parliament respected and implemented the Brexit referendum two years back, by now the UK would be out, sorted and thriving.

The MPS having so blatantly failed to lead the nation show it is now time that, instead, they stepped back and followed the country.

From now on we, the people, must take all the big decisions via informed referendums, leaving the MPS to honour our verdicts and implement them without further ado.

That will be a fine 90th birthday gift!

“If you can’t make decisions in life, you’re a bloody menace. You’d be better becoming an MP.” This was a Bill Shankly quote of many years ago. How appropriate and applicable is this quote to the politicians involved in the Brexit fiasco over the past two and a half years?
