CALL FOR TEST TO INCLUDE MOTORWAYS

-

A survey of UK residents has revealed that most would like to see a motorway driving portion on the practical driving test.

Over half (51 per cent) said motorway driving should be on the driving test.

Motorway driving was, until last year, illegal for all learner drivers, but changes to the DVSA’S rules mean learners now have the chance to gain experience on the motorway during lessons. This coincided with other changes to the practical test, with the addition of Satnav and the removal of the reverse around the corner manoeuvre.

Just under half, 49 per cent, of UK residents said tackling a roundabout should be included, with 47 per cent wanting to see parallel parking in every test. Emergency stops were also popular, with 46 per cent of people wanting them to be assessed.

New elements such as night driving were seen as important with 45 per cent wanting it to be added to the test.

People also think the theory test should change, with 43 per cent believing it is important for learner drivers to be able to name parts of a car.

Two of the most popular suggestions in the survey were learner drivers completing a minimum number of hours behind the wheel of a car before being able to take their test. Nearly 80 per cent said that should be the case, with 84 per cent saying there should be a probationary period for new drivers with their licence at risk if they commit a traffic offence or are found at fault in an accident.
