Rational debate welcomed
With Andrew Wilson again speaking out around currency options for an independent Scotland, the political debate might seem like Groundhog Day.
At such a time, we would do well to remember the words of Barack Obama, when he said: “You need to believe in facts.” Turns out that the £350 million extra promised for the NHS wasn’t a fact. Indeed, the entire Brexit campaign was seemingly a fact-free zone.
Whatever your political views, Andrew Wilson’s campaign looks honest by comparison. We can
all understand what “significant effort” to make a success of independence means. In Scotland we know about facts. We can lay great claim to having invented the modern world though an enlightenment that brought the world modern economics, philosophy and an array of scientific theories and advances.
What better time to learn from that Scottish Enlightenment and try to secure a political debate that casts aside the rampant populism seen from Donald Trump, Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson. Mr Wilson’s efforts to have a more rational debate should be welcomed.
