The friendly skies

-

It was reported recently that Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth had been scrambled twice to intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft that had entered our airspace.

There is no doubt that the reason for this intrusion was the entry of the aircraft carrier the Queen Elizabeth from the North Sea into the Forth on its way to Rosyth. This spying

has been going on for years – they were doing it in 1977, when I was stationed at RAF Leuchars. They turn back as soon as they are met and have been known to wave goodbye.

It is comforting to know that these quick reaction aircraft, originally at Leuchars until it closed, are on standby 24 hours a day and are very efficient at their work.

But these visits are not those of a friendly neighbour.
