Speed demons?

-

More than 100 drivers have been caught breaking Edinburgh’s 20mph limit in the first major police crackdown, The Scotsman has learned. A speed camera van recorded 105 motorists speeding on Ocean Drive in Leith over just four hours. Some were doing under 30mph and others more than 40mph.

Kerching! Lets get those coffers swelled guys. Never mind investigating seriouse crime, let’s hit the easy target – drivers.

The twits who imposed the 20mph limit should be jailed! Our clever wee boys in blue could catch 95% of drivers ‘speeding’. They should refuse to enforce such a barking mad regulation.

It’s a law, which you’re obliged to adhere to, as one of the responsibilities you signed up to when given a licence.

Dunnomuch What was the previous limit? There’s some interesting research been done over the years that suggests that combining wide open streets with low limits isn’t particularly effective, because the drivers tend to see the limits as being artificially low for no good reason. The net effect is that the average speeds start to creep up, and the limits are ignored.

Tired of the Lies It has been shown that blanket bans make only a very slight change to average speed as most people just ignore them. It has also been shown that they make no difference to the road accident rate.

cgm59 Just because it’s a law doesn’t mean it’s a good law. People have ignored poor laws in the past and this one should also be ignored. However there are places where 20 mph is a good law, in schemes and past schools for example, not main roads where pedestrians should take more care crossing a busy thoroughfare.
