In your article “UK’S carbon emissions melt ice equivalent to four major cities in one year” (10 April), WWF claim to be able to calculate the impact of the UK’S carbon dioxide emissions in terms of reduced ice cover in the Arctic for each tonne emitted.

This claim is well beyond belief and credibility when total annual global emissions of more than 38 billion tonnes result in only 400 parts per million (0.04 per cent) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. One tonne would thus have an unmeasurably small impact on global atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Then, of course, carbon dioxide is not the only greenhouse gas, so has the impact of these other gases been taken into account?

Perhaps the WWF would like to share their rationale behind this claim?
