Bird donates presenting wardrobe to charity shop

0 Jackie Bird: ‘There’ll be a charity shop in Glasgow awash with news outfits sooner rather than later’ Former newsreader Jackie Bird has revealed she is giving outfits she wore while presenting Reporting Scotland to her local charity shop.

The broadcaster announced her departure from the programme last week after 30 years in the role.

Bird, 56, said “I have a huge collection of dresses and jackets and outfits and earrings that I don’t know what I’m going to do with.

“They are clothes you wouldn’t really wear every day. I’m more jeans and T-shirt, so I can’t imagine I’m going to be wearing them now.

“I’ll clear out the wardrobes and make some room. There will be a charity shop in Glasgow awash with news outfits sooner rather than later.”

She kept her departure a secret from her friends and colleagues and finished her last broadcast on Wednesday with no fanfare. Her decision to leave the early-evening bulletin was announced the next morning.

However, she almost did not get the chance to deliver her final bulletin after coming down with a cold in the days before her exit.

She told the Sunday Post: “It was hugely hard to keep the secret. My immediate bosses knew but no-one else did. I actually came in to the studio on Monday, feeling and sounding rubbish. I felt much the same on Tuesday and was told to go home.

“On Wednesday I knew it was my last day, but noone else did, and the producer and my colleagues kept saying, ‘You shouldn’t be in today, why have you come in?’”
