Salah’s cracker puts Liverpool back on top

The race for the title remains too close to call with the lead twice changing hands yesterday as both Manchester City and Liverpool racked up victories.

City got the ball rolling with a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, but it was Liverpool’s home win over Chelsea which was perhaps the more significan­t achievemen­t given the calibre of their opponents, who are chasing a Champions League place.

A wonder strike by Mohamed Salah was the highlight of an Anfield encounter where Liverpool looked a little nervy as they battled to ensure there was no repeat of five years ago when their title hopes were ruined by a 2-0 defeat in the same fixture.

Both sides passed up chances in the first half, but it was Liverpool who emerged for the second half the more purposeful to take a two-goal lead.

Sadio Mane’s headed opener after 51 minutes was greeted with huge relief and Salah’s thunderous effort two 0 Mohamed Salah’s wonder strike lit up Anfield.

Chelsea fought to get back into the game but an Eden Hazard effort which hit the post was the closest they came.

Earlier, a Raheem Sterling double inspired City to a ninth straight Premier League win to briefly put them back on top of the table.

Sterling struck after 15 and 61 minutes before Luka Milivojevi­c’s free-kick reduced the deficit.

However, City substitute Gabriel Jesus wrapped it up.
