My wife and I this week attended the 40th anniversary concert of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

NYOS represents the best of Scotland’s young musical talent and its flagship orchestra ranks with the finest anywhere in the world. Over the years we have attended its concerts in Berlin, Amsterdam and the BBC London Proms, where our youngsters have consistently played to the highest of standards and to packed houses.

The players of NYOS have so much to offer in so many ways; yet they might be forgiven for feeling slightly disheartened at the relatively small numbers who supported this week’s concert in Edinburgh. DAVID & JENNIFER RIMER Pentland Terrace, Edinburgh
