Morton’s relegation fears remain after Mccauley plunders late equaliser

-

Lyon 27, Kiltie 42 pen coming from behind to lead through Reece Lyon and Greg Kiltie. But they could not see the game out as Darren Mccauley equalised with a late strike.

The Highlanders had taken the lead against the run of play in 18 minutes and it was a moment to savour for winger Anthony Mcdonald.

The 17-year-old, on loan from Hearts, made a surging run down the right and suddenly Morton were exposed.

He used his pace to cut inside and get away from Jim Mcalister and then placed a perfect left-foot shot into the left corner to clam his first senior goal.

It was a blow to Morton who had been the better side and, in their current predicament, they might have felt sorry for themselves. But they were quickly back in control and they were level in 27 minutes.

Cammy Mackay, deputising for Mark Ridgers in the Inverness goal, had made a fine save to deny Reece Lyon two minutes earlier. However, he could do nothing about Lyon’s halfvolley fired past him and into the right corner from the edge of the box after Caley Thistle had failed to properly clear Michael Tumilty’s cross.

Then, three minutes before half-time, Morton finally managed to score more than one goal in a game for the first time since 28 December when they won a penalty.

Joe Chalmers grappled Gregor Buchanan to the deck and was cautioned for protesting. Kiltie spotted the ball and made no mistake from 12 yards.

He should have made it a comfortable night two minutes into the second half but tried to be too cute with his finish and Shaun Rooney cleared off the line.

It proved so costly as Inverness grabbed an equaliser two minutes from time when Darren Mccauley drove the ball home after Liam Polworth crossed from the right. It moved John Robertson’s men nine points clear of fifth-placed Dunfermline Athletic.
