Having just returned from a pleasant sojourn in the Gullin and Nurth Berrick area, I was interested to read Alexander Mccall Smith’s perspectiv­e on place name pronunciat­ion. Whether down to local dialect or otherwise, other interestin­g examples are Strathaven, Muthill and Culzean. I originally come from Kilmarnock, pronounced Troon.
