Having just returned from a pleasant sojourn in the Gullin and Nurth Berrick area, I was interested to read Alexander Mccall Smith’s perspective on place name pronunciation. Whether down to local dialect or otherwise, other interesting examples are Strathaven, Muthill and Culzean. I originally come from Kilmarnock, pronounced Troon.
