Represent all
After the Easter recess, Nicola Sturgeon has promised an update regarding a second independence referendum. This will not be easy, with some in the independence movement impatient to hear a call for another vote, while others urge caution on the basis of polls suggesting that another vote in the short term might well deliver the same result as in 2014.
Whatever the First Minister decides, I hope she speaks with respect of the continuing majority of the people of Scotland who want to remain in the UK, and certainly do not want another divisive constitutional vote when we are still recovering from the last two, in 2014 and 2016.
When Nicola Sturgeon became First Minister she spoke of representing the best interests of all of Scotland, no matter how they voted in 2014, nor whether they support the SNP.
At this next crucial point regarding Scotland’s big question, it is surely critical to hear how what she proposes is representative of the majority. For this purpose that cannot mean simply hijacking the votes of all those in Scotland who voted Remain in 2016, and misrepresenting them as indicating some kind of preference on the question of Scottish independence.
