The eight signatures demanding that the government introduce a deposit return scheme (DRS) and ignore the special interest groups lobbying to exclude certain material from the scheme are blinkered (Letters 19 April). Do they not understand that the majority of people do recycle?
In West Lothian we have a very efficient system for recycling. The bottle bank take glass bottles and jars, the blue bin takes plastic bottles, paper, metal cans, plastic containers and disposable cups. People are employed to do this – are the eight signatories happy to see thousands of people in Scotland out of work?
Idiots who throw away bottles, cans and fast food containers will continue since 10p on a carry-out is insignificant. If they cannot put their waste in a bin ten yards away they will not travel to a DRS machine. The solution is fear, fear that they will be caught and given a hefty fine. What is the Scottish Government waiting for?
