Together as one: Turkish and New Zealand service personnel pay tribute on Gallipoli anniversary
Turkish and New Zealand soldiers attended an international service marking the 104th anniversary of the First World War battle of Gallipoli at the Turkish Mehmetcik monument in the Gallipoli peninsula in Canakkale yesterday. Today is Anzac Day in Australia in New Zealand, which commemorates the landing of troops from those countries at Gallipoli in an ill-fated campaign that saw tens of thousands killed in battles against German-backed Ottoman forces. The imposing Canakkale Martyrs’ Memorial commemorates the service of around a quarter of a million Turks who participated.
