Scotsman feature writers triumph at awards

- By DALE MILLER

Two of The Scotsman’s most accomplished writers claimed honours at last night’s Scottish Press Awards.

Dani Garavelli was crowned Double tree by Hi lt onf eature writer of the year for her work in both Scotland on Sunday and The Scots man at an awards dinner held in Glasgow. And Aidan Smith was named sports feature writer of the year in a hotly-contested category that also featured The Scotsman’s Alan Pattullo as a finalist.

Garavelli, who was last year’s winner of the inaugural Nicola Barry Award, was also nominated as a finalist for columnist of the year along with “scoop of the year” for her investigation into the tragic death of William Lindsay at Polmont.

Smith’s in-depth interviews with former Scotland rugby player John Beattie, ex-rangers and Hearts defender Hugh Burns and marathon runner Jim Alder convinced judges he was a worthy winner of the award for a fifth time.

Andy Ship ley, from sister title the Edinburgh Evening News, was runner-up in the “scoop of the year” category for a piece about new mother Amanda Cox dying in a stairwell at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

The triumphs capped a strong night for the newspaper group. Transport correspondent Alastair Dalton and David Bol were nominated as finalists, alongside the Evening News’s Kieran Murray and Rohese Devereux Taylor.

Fife Free Press, which is also owned by JPI Media, was named local/weekly newspaper of the year.
