A bad Hairs day for the Highlanders

- By GARY HEATLY

Oli Hairs smashed a century as the Eastern Knights’ brilliant start to the Regional Series 50-over competition continued yesterday.

On Sunday, George Munsey’s 139 in quick time was the highlight of their opening victory over the Western Warriors, but this time another left-handed batsman put the Caledonian Highlanders to the sword.

In 2010, as a teenager playing for Mazars Grange, Hairs earned five Scotland One Day International caps and has since played mainly down south.

Now 28, he has made himself available for the Knights this summer and was clearly happy to be back playing at Portgower Place.

Chasing 234 to win, the Knights made a flying start, Hairs making 116 and Watsonians captain Mike Carson assisting with 58.

There was still time for a Munsey cameo, the 26-year-old coming in as the run chase reached its conclusion and smashing 41 not out off 13 balls to continue his amazing April and lead the Knights home by eight wickets.

Earlier in the day Forfarshire’s Scott Cameron had top scored for the visitors, batting first with 46, while Scotland man Craig Wallace made 44, but 233 all out never looked enough on a good batting wicket. Heriot’s pro Hayes van der Berg led the way with 3-45 for the Knights with the ball while Grange teenager Jamie Cairns claimed two wickets with his spin including Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer.

Scotland’s first ODI of the summer is against Afghanistan next Wednesday.
