Irish defender Carroll raring to go as he agrees Fir Park switch

- By ANGUS WRIGHT

Motherwell have announced the imminent signing of left-back Jake Carroll from Cambridge United.

The 27-year-old Irishman has agreed a deal to move to Fir Park in June.

Carroll moved from St Patrick’s Athletic in his native Dublin to Huddersfield for a six-figure fee in 2013 and spent time on loan at Partick Thistle before moving to Hartlepool in 2015.

The defender has since played 94 times in two seasons with Sky Bet League Two side Cambridge. Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson told the club’s official website: “Jake has great attributes which will bring a lot to the squad.

“He’s quick and he’s a strong defender. But he will come here and have to earn the right to play, as we’ve got competition in his position.

“We’re making a lot of early progress in getting players signed, with Jake joining Declan Gallagher and Liam Polworth in committing early.

“We’re continuing to push to get our business done early, both with players we’ve offered contracts to and to others we have identified.”

Carroll added: “I’m looking forward to getting started in the summer with the club. I know there’s a lot of competition for places, but I’m coming to be part of the squad and looking to establish myself.”

As one Jake gets ready to arrive at Motherwell, another is preparing to leave, with Rangers still understood to be on the verge of signing 20-yearold winger Jake Hastie. Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard said on Sunday that the club were “on the cusp” of announcing the Hastie deal.
