SNP is ‘most anti-brexit’ amid voter confusion

- By PARIS GOURTSOYANNIS

The Brexit challenge for Labour and the Conservatives has been underlined by a poll showing that voters see the SNP as the most anti-brexit party in the UK.

In a survey by Yougov, 65 per cent of respondents said they thought the SNP was against Brexit, the highest figure for any political party.

Meanwhile, Labour is seen as anti-brexit by 42 per cent of respondents, while 13 per cent believe it is pro-brexit, 20 per cent said Jeremy Corbyn’s party was neither for or against Brexit, and 25 per cent said they didn’t know.

Despite the government’s determination to deliver a deal to exit the EU, 24 per cent of people said the Tories were anti-brexit, and 37 per cent said the party is pro-brexit. 19 per cent said the Conservatives were neither pro nor antibrexit, and 20 per cent said they didn’t know.

SNP MEP Alyn Smith said the poll showed voters knew the SNP “has fought tooth and nail to stop Scotland being dragged out of the EU”. He added: “A vote for the SNP in the European elections will make clear that Scotland says no to Brexit.”

The Liberal Democrats, the first party to back a second EU referendum, were seen as anti-brexit by 53 per cent. Yougov collected responses from 1,730 people across the UK on 24 and 25 April.
