Amazon pro-anorexia books slated

- By JOSH THOMAS

An MP has expressed her “revulsion” as she claimed internet giant Amazon is selling pro-anorexia books.

Tory MP Rachel Maclean said “pro-ana” material is available to buy on the site. She called for the UK government to take action to have the books removed.

Addressing the House of Commons yesterday, Ms Maclean said: “Are you aware that tech giant Amazon is selling books under the category of pro-ana, which purport to show anorexia as a healthy lifestyle?

“Do you share my revulsion that these books are available online?

“Will you call on Amazon to take this content down immediately and will you look at whether the online harms’ white paper can take the tech giants such as Amazon also into their remit?”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock promised to look into the issue, saying Amazon “surely has a duty of care” to its customers.

An online petition on website Change.org to remove proanorexia books from Amazon has gained more than 10,000 signatures since it was set up a week ago.
