Saints are fortunate to be able to use the postsplit fixtures to look to next season and concentrate on using players who have contracts. As well as giving players an opportunity to impress, the games will allow the manager to confirm whether he needs to adjust his shopping list, player or position-wise. No doubt players who have contracts will bear in mind Tommy Wright’s thoughts on a contract not being a long-term guarantee.

Saturday’s game at St Mirren highlighted the fact that smaller capacity stadiums which are well filled provide a better atmosphere than a half-empty stadium. The noisy home support were terrific.
