Old locomotive races across Forth Bridge on whistlesto­p tour north

Shrouded by a bill ow of smoke, the Union of South Africa crosses the Forth Bridge yesterday, en route to Aberdeen as part of the Great Britain XII tour. The historic locomotive, built in Doncaster in 1937, is one of just six surviving Gresley A4s, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, It was based at Ferryhill in Aberdeen between 1962 and 1966, and returned to its former berth as part of its visit to the city.
