Scots men and women eye last four

Alan Clyne, Rory Stewart and debutant Angus Gilliams all had key wins as Scotland’s men took a huge step towards tomorrow’s semi-finals by stunning old rivals Germany at the European Team Squash Championsh­ips in Birmingham.

Gilliams defeated Yannick Omlor in the final rubber to seal a 3-1 victory over the fourth-ranked Germans. Clyne had earlier beaten Valentin Rapp in three straight games before Greg Lobban lost the top match to world No 5 Simon Rosner. Stewart swung the momentum back towards Scotland when he finally overcame Rudi Rohrmuller.

Victory today over Pool A outsiders Hungary will book Scotland’s last-four spot.

Scotland women upset fourth seeds Holland.

Top Scot Lisa Aitken threw away a 7-1 fifth-game lead before defeating Milou Van Der Heijden, and teenager Georgia Adderley then secured the winning point against Tessa ter Sluis. Scotland will reach the semi-finals if they beat fifth seeds Wales today.
