Stage 1 goes to Asselman

Jesper Asselman took the stage victory from a breakaway on a rain-soaked first day of the Tour de Yorkshire.

For 182 kilometres, the riders fought the conditions before seven set off in the breakaway.

With Ineos – formerly Sky – and Mark Cavendish’s Team Dimension Data chasing, the final four survivors of the break – Asselman, Dan Bigham, Joe Nally and Kevin Vermaerke – had to dig deep. In the end Dutchman Asselman had just enough for the win.
