Corey Kluber suffered an arm fracture when he was struck by a line drive during the Cleveland Indians’ 4-2 loss to the Miami Marlins.

The star pitcher was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning when he was hit by Brian Anderson’s comebacker, leaving him with a non-displaced fracture of the ulna. Kluber had allowed three runs over four and two-thirds innings before the injury.

BASKETBALL

The Portland Trail Blazers held off a late rally by the Denver Nuggets to triumph 97-90 and level their play-off series at one game apiece. Portland raced to an early lead in the second game of their Western Conference semi-finals, leading by 15 points at half-time and 14 at the start of the final quarter. But the Nuggets pulled themselves back into contention and trailed by just five points in the final minute only for Rodney Hood to seal victory for the Trail Blazers with two free throws 17 seconds before the buzzer.

Six Portland players finished in double figures, with CJ Mccollum leading the way on 20 points and Enes Kanter adding another 15. Denver’s Nikola Jokic was held to 16 points

- a less dominating performanc­e than his 37 points in game one.

The Trail Blazers take home court advantage into game three, which takes place tonight. NBA

ICE HOCKEY

The Carolina Hurricanes are just one win away from sealing a spot in the Eastern Conference finals after beating the New York Islanders 5-2. Justin Williams scored the go-ahead goal with 9:45 remaining in the third period as Carolina took a 3-0 lead in the second-round play-off series.

The scoreline was tied at 2-2 before Williams netted from a pass by Sebastian Aho, while Teuvo Teravainen and Aho both scored empty-net goals in the final minute to consolidat­e the victory.

The Hurricanes began the play-offs with two losses in the first round, but have since won seven of the past eight and will aim to secure a series sweep against New York tonight. The Dallas Stars defeated the St Louis Blues 4-2 to even up their series at two games each. Ben Bishop made 27 saves, while Roope Hintz scored his fifth goal of the play-offs.
