Motorway death toll rises

A lorr y driver has died in a crash, becoming the fourth fatality on a motorway in less than 24 hours.

The 42- year- old man was driving a light goods vehicle that was involved in a collision with a BMW car on the M74 near Lesmahagow at about 6: 25pm on Thursday.

The lorry then left the carriageway and overturned. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 36- year- old man driving the BMW was not injured.

He has been arrested and charged in connection with alleged road traffic offences.

The crash on t he nor t hbound carriageway came less than 24 hours after two fatal crashes farther south.
