KEYS TO KNOW

- Knoll Brow, Westfield, Bathgate, West Lothian. Sauna and summer house. Offers over £410,000. Contact Castlebrae on 01506 676300.

Another big selling point is that it has a Bathgate postcode, which means that it is comparatively affordable but in the prized Linlithgow school catchment area.

Russell recalls: “The location definitely attracted us. We have so much peace and privacy, across the road is a farm track and five minutes later you are out into the country.”

As its name, Knoll Brow, suggests, it is elevated and the views are to the Pentlands and the Bathgate Hills, while the front is over open farmland, currently filled with sheep and lambs. There is a lovely treeline in front which is silhouetted in evening light.

The Brodies’ elder children are now based in Aberdeen and London, while their youngest is in his last year at school.

Valerie and Russell retired last year and he says: “This house is a fantastic house for a family, and we have so many happy memories of gatherings. The thought that now children have flown the nest we would only occasionally fill it, means we are ready for a different lifestyle.”

Their home in Portugal beckons – which Russell reckons might make the children more eager to visit – but he says they will all miss living in Westfield. “We have put a lot of heart and soul into the house, but it is time to move on.” Detached five-bedroomed house in its own gardens.

Family room and kitchen, sitting room, garden room.
