Vote for prison staff over pay strike ac­tion


Prison of­fi­cers are to be bal­loted on in­dus­trial ac­tion over pay, as union lead­ers warned staff morale “has never been lower”.

T h e P r i s o n O f f i c e r s As­so­ci­a­tion Scot­land said its mem­bers are feel­ing anger and frus­tra­tion as they face what union bosses claim is the prospect of an­other year of capped pay rises.

The were con­cerned over “in­ad­e­quate” pay, as of­fi­cers have to deal with grow­ing lev­els of violence, over­crowd­ing and in­creas­ingly volatile en­vi­ron­ments.

It called for the Scot­tish Gov­ern­ment to re­spond quickly to i t s con­cerns, cau­tion­ing: “We are on the slippy slope back to the dark days of the 80s.”

A s p o k e s wo ma n f o r the Scot­tish Prison Ser­vice said: ““In con­junc­tion with the Scot­tish Gov­ern­ment, SPS will do ever ything it can to ar­rive at a fair and ac­cept­able pay set­tle­ment.”
