Bid to scrap parking charges in car parks fails

The Scotsman - - AROUND SCOTLAND -

A bid to scrap parking charges in three towns in Angus has failed.

SNP group leader Lynne Devine proposed halting the controversial charges in Brechin, Carnousie and Kirriemuir, saying: “The one size fits all has been a disaster. Car perks are empty, they’re bringing in nothing.”

But Independent Councillor Mark Salmond proposed an amendment to keep things as they were, saying that removing parking charges would create “a two tier Angus.”

After a split vote, Provost Ronnie Proctor backed the amendment.
