Two soldiers killed in operation to free tourists
Two French soldiers have been killed in a militar y operation in the West African nation of Burkina Faso that freed two French tourists and t wo others kidnapped in neighbouring Benin.
F r e n c h P r e s i d e n t E m m a n u e l M a c r o n expressed condolences for the two soldiers killed in the operation and promised support to Burkina Faso and Benin in fighting terrorism in the Sahel region.
The other t wo people who were freed were an American and a S outh K o r e a n . T h e t o u r i s t s failed to return from a visit last week to the Pendjari National Park wildlife reserve. Their guide was later found dead.
Islamic extremists have become increasingly active in Burkina Faso, raising worries the militants could be infiltrating Benin.
