Two sol­diers killed in op­er­a­tion to free tourists


Two French sol­diers have been killed in a mil­i­tar y op­er­a­tion in the West African na­tion of Burkina Faso that freed two French tourists and t wo oth­ers kid­napped in neigh­bour­ing Benin.

F r e n c h P r e s i d e n t E m m a n u e l M a c r o n ex­pressed con­do­lences for the two sol­diers killed in the op­er­a­tion and promised sup­port to Burkina Faso and Benin in fight­ing ter­ror­ism in the Sa­hel re­gion.

The other t wo peo­ple who were freed were an Amer­i­can and a S outh K o r e a n . T h e t o u r i s t s failed to re­turn from a visit last week to the Pend­jari Na­tional Park wildlife re­serve. Their guide was later found dead.

Is­lamic ex­trem­ists have be­come in­creas­ingly ac­tive in Burkina Faso, rais­ing wor­ries the mil­i­tants could be in­fil­trat­ing Benin.
