Life’s a beach: UK’S only cricket team with beach pitch kick off summer season

Cricket players from the Ship Inn and Borderers teams hold the first match of the season at the beach in Elie. The Ship Inn pub is the only cricket team in the UK to play their matches on a beach. Over the course of a season they hold regular fixtures against Scottish clubs as well as touring teams from across the world. Beach cricket was first played in the area in 1990, but dates and times of matches are often decided by the flow of the tide. The pub has previously hosted touring sides from as far afield as the West Indies and will end this season in September with a 30 over match against a Scottish Women’s XI.
