Save our Gardens!

-

Plans are made to spend millions on redesigning Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh ready for an increase in “events to make the area world-class”.

In the first months of this year there have been a number of first-rate events which made the gardens world-class.

The first sensation was the huge bank of snow drops dazzlingly white below the Mound. Then the daffodils’ golden yellow spreading hugely below the castle. It was a joy to see them from a distance and a privilege to walk up among them.

Next came the blossom along the edge of Princes Street. This

was a delicate pink and white splendour to glad den the heart. Now the gardens are a glorious picture of many colours including blue rosemary for remembrance above the statue of the soldier. Visitors from all over the world enjoy the gardens.

Recently a Chinese gentle - man was disappointed not to

see the Floral Clock. Soon will come beautiful roses in a variety of colours. Then the Floral Clock will be set out with skill and attention to detail in a pattern of excellence. Those who do that work are indeed worldclass.

If as a society we cannot find in the gardens enough entertainment and joy as they are,

then we are surely in sad decline.
