Djokovic’s Madrid win secures 33rd Masters title

Novak Djokovic last night equal led Ra fa el N ad al’ s record for the most ATP Masters 1,000 titles as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Madrid Open final.

Djoko vic clinched his 33 rd Masters title–and third in Madrid – with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

T sit sip as, the exciting 20 -year-old from Greece, had stunned Nadal in the semi-final but had no answer to the world No 1.

Djokovic, who did not face a break point throughout the match, broke in the second game of the contest and breezed through the rest of the set.

The Serbian broke in the ninth game of the second set before securing victory on his third match point.

“These are the best tournament­s, biggest tournament­s we have in our sport, in the ATP, of course alongside the Grand Slams,” said Djokovic, pictured. “This is as important and as good as it gets.”

T sit sip as admitted that he was still feeling the effects of his semi-final win over Nadal.

“He deserved the victory, he played unbelievab­le. I couldn’t do much,” said the Greek player.

“Physically I was not there. My legs were not coping with my mind. Completely I could feel the fatigue and this soreness, not justin my legs, but everywhere in my body. And yes, he played quite smart.”

In the doubles final, Jean-Julien Roje rand Horia Tecau beat Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzma­n 6-2,6-3 for their second Madrid Open title, adding to their 2016 victor y. On Saturday, Kiki Bertens won the women’s title with a 6-4,6-4 triumph over Simona Halep.

In Rome, meanwhile, British pair Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans reached the main singles draw at the Italian Open by beating Nicolas Jarr y and Dusan Lajovic respective­ly.

Norrie saved two match points to beat Jarry in three sets – winning the deciding tie-breaker 8-6 – while Evans shocked world No 24 Lajovic 7-5, 6-3.
