Butcher spurred by memory of Wembley triumph as he bids for more play-off glory

- By EUAN MCARTHUR

Callum Butcher lapp ed up the euphoria of Millwall’s dramatic play-off final victory at Wembley – and is now dreaming of doing it all over again with Dundee United.

Butcher is gearing up for tonight’s Premiership playoff semi-final first leg tie away to Inverness with memories still fresh from when he was a member of Neil Harris’s triumphant Lions side which defeated Bradford 1-0 to spark scenes of sheer joy among their fans, who had to be ordered back to the stands after a pitch invasion.

Back in 2017, Millwall won that League One play-off final and midfielder Butcher would love to savour another such experience.

Butcher said: “That’s something I’ll never forget. Winning with Millwall at Wembley two years ago was just massive.

“There were more than 50,000 fans there that day. It was electric as you could imagine and we all know what happened at the end with the fans. They were just bursting with excitement.

“It’ s definitely the highlight of my career. Going up through the play-offs is the best way sometimes.

“Getting automatic promotion is great but it’ s a bit more special when you do it through the play-offs, because you remember it more just for what it is and those extra games.

“Hopefully I can have another special day like that now that I’m back in Scotland. That would mean everything.the key is trying to play the game – not the occasion. You want to keep calm in situations, and try to take away the crowd and what it means.

“Inverness are a good side who beat us in the S cottish Cup not that long ago, and then web eat them in the league up at their place. We’re going there in a reasonable run of form and it’s goo d to have players in the dressing room who’ve had that experience of playing in the play-off sand getting promotion.

“I”m not the only one and hopefully it can give us a bit of an advantage going into these games.”
