Love should be fit for World Cup as Kerr announces squad today

- By ALAN CAMPBELL

Scotland’ s most capped outfield player, Glasgow City midfielder Jo Love, is expected to be fit in time for the World Cup. The 23- player squad will be announced at Hampden today by head coach Shelley Kerr.

Love, pictured, who came on as a substitute at the start of the second half to make her 191 st international appearance in last month’ s 1-0 win over Brazil, missed Friday night’s SWPL Cup final with a calf strain.

The 33- year-old is not expected to play in her club’s last two league matches before the summer break.

“Jo picked up as train in the game before the final ,” City head coach Scott Booth explained. “She’s not trained with us since.

“With a calf strain you’ re talking maybe two or three weeks but she will be fine–she knows how to manage these things.

“We won’t take any risks with her because we want her togo to the World Cup as well and there’s plenty of time between now and then to get herself fit.”

All 23 players who travelled to Spain for the friend lies against Chile and Brazil are in pole positions to also be on the flight to Nice on 5 June. The first Group D game against England is four days later. Two players who missed that trip, Arsenal left-back Emma Mitchell and Fiorentina striker Lana Clelland, are the most likely to be given recalls. Clelland is fully fit again, while Mitchell returned to the Arsenal side for their final league game against Manchester City on Saturday.

The 26-year-old hadn’t played any first-team football since an FA Cup win against Manchester United on 7 February, and only came on after 80 minutes on Saturday. She then scored a spectacular 20-yard winner for the English champions to celebrate her return.
