Advantage Annan after Goodwillie penalty miss

- By ANTHONY BROWN at Galabank

Chris Johnston’ s firsthalf goal has left rampant Annan Athletic on course for their first promotion since joining the Scottish League in 2008.

The former Kilmarnock wingers truck the only goal of the League 1 playoff final shortly after Clyde striker David Goodwillie missed a penalty.

Annan now go into the second leg on the back of a six-game winning streak and unbeaten in their last nine. Clyde, who had their fair share of chances to level the tie in front of a crowd of 1,006 at Galabank, can draw some encouragement from the fact Annan’s last defeat came at Broadwood on 23 March as they bid to overcome the deficit on Saturday and end their nine-years tin tin S cotland’s fourth tier.

Ann an made a bright star t but the visitors had a golden chance to take the lead after ten minutes when Steven Swinglehurst fouled Ally Love in the box but Good willie was too casual with his penalty and fired his kick the wrong side of Alex Mitchell’s lefthand post.

The hosts made the breakthrough in the 21st minute when Johnston fired home from close range after Clyde failed to deal with a long throw-in by Lewis Strapp.

The Bully Wee threaten ed an equaliser after half an hour but former Annan defender Mar tin Mcniff headed over from Chris Mcstay’s corner.

Annan almost doubled their lead two minutes into the second half but Ayrton S onkur headed just over from Johnston’s cross.

Clyde threatened in the 56 th minute but Kevin Nicoll’s shot from the edge of the box fizzed just over the bar. Go o dwillie then saw a low angled shot from inside the box blocked by the legs of Mitchell.

Annan thought they had increased their lead in 78 minutes when Wilson burst through and clipped the ball behind Blair Currie but Scott Rumsby cleared it off the line.
