- By ANGUS WRIGHT

Kenny S hie ls has been named as the new manager of the Northern Ireland women’s team.

The former Kilmarnock and Morton boss replaces Alfie Wylie, who became the head of women’s elite performance earlier this year.

S hie ls, who previously spent eight years coaching the Northern Ireland under-17s alongside other jobs in club management, last managed at Derry City, where he was in charge from 2015 to 2018.

“I am extremely proud to have been appointed to this role and I am delighted to be manager of my country’s senior women’s international team,” Shiels said.

“Women’s football is the fastest growing area of the game and it is hugely exciting to be taking up this role at this time.

“I want to do everything that I can to bring success to Northern Ireland. There is a lot of work to do but I am convinced that I can help this group of players compete and push for qualification for major tournaments.”

S hi el swill now begin work preparing for the qualifying campaign for Uefa Women’s Euro 2021. Northern Ireland have been drawn in Group C alongside Norway, Wales, Belarus and the Fa roe Islands, and start at home to Norway on 30 August.
