Motorists warned over deer on roads
Motorists ar e b e i ng warned to be extra- vigilant about deer on the roads following a rise in collisions
The number of crashes involving deer normally increases in May and June as young animals look for their own territories, but a growing population of the animals means even more risk on the roads.
I t i s estimated t hat there are around 9,000 accidents each year, with around 100 people injured, some seriously.
Scottish Natural Heritage has now warned drivers not to swerve, especially on motorways and trunk A- roads where up to 40 per cent of collisions happen.
J a mi e H a mmond , Scottish Natural Heritage deer management officer, said: “We advise motorists to slow down a n d wat c h f o r d e e r crossing roads.”
