Kompany still in the frame to face Scotland

- By MARK WALKER

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez will still pick Vincent Kompany for their Euro 2020 showdown with Scotland even though he is now Anderlecht playermanager.

But former Celtic loan star Jason Denayer is out of the match after suffering an injury with Lyon.

Manchester City legend Kompany announced after City had completed their historic treble at the weekend that he would become player-manager of the Brussels side, but Martinez has made clear there is no way he expects the 33-yearold to call a halt to his international career.

Martinez said :“We are happy with this new position for Vincent. He has always shown the quali - ties necessary to occupy this type of role.

“I have no doubt that this new chapter will be successful for him. He’s a great asset for Belgian football and his arrival will certainly help our game because he is a big name.

“Like all Belgium players, I will judge him by his performances on the pitch.

“And we look forward to working with him in June for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Scotland.”

But Denayer – who spent a season on loan at Celtic in 2014 and formed an impressive partnership with Virgil van Dijk, who is now the world’s costliest defender–will be out of the qualifiers after suffering a knee injury that may require surgery.
