St Johnstone Ollie’s reward
The phrase “It is a great place to come and work” was used by two ex-players and Brian Easton in the last few days. Dave Mackay and Fraser Wright in interviews after the fifth anniversary lunch to mark our Scottish Cup win and Brian when asked about agreeing a new contract.
Tommy Wright gave a couple of players a start who have not featured often this season. Leaving aside the fact that nothing was at stake for Saints against Accies, the changes weakened the performance. Biggest cheer was for the introduction of the under-18s’ top scorer, Ollie Hamilton, to reward a great season scoring more than 30 goals. Will he become a 30-goalsa-season first-team player? Time will tell. Saturday was always going to be out of Saints’ hands and after delivering on their part, it was a shame that St Johnstone couldn’t pull off that crucial favour.
The league table doesn’t lie – St Mirren weren’t go o d enough to avoid the play- off p osition throughout the course of the season, but in the last couple of months went through a muchneeded turn in fortunes, just as it appeared they were dead and buried in 12th position. Perfect timing you would say, leading into the play-offs. However Dundee United come into the final in brilliant form as well, having won five of their last six games. The final is finely poised and will be a tasty one for the neutral.
