MP makes plea for last-minute plan to stop EU citizens losing their vote
The government was urged to step in with an emergency response to avoid millions of EU citizens being disenfranchised in today’ sEuropean elections.
SNP MP Joanna Cherry told the Prime Minister that unless polling stations were supplied with forms that Euro - pean nationals need to fill out to ensure they can vote, many would be barred from casting their ballots.
The forms are in addition to the normal electoral registration process, and confirm that EU citizens will not cast a second vote in their home country.
Because of the late decision to hold EU elections in the UK due to the delay to Brexit, little public information has been issued about the extra requirement.
“Over the last few days, I have received distressed emails from a number of constituents who are EU citizens living in the UK, but who will not be able to vote tomorrow,” Ms Cherry told Theresa May at PMQS.
She called on Mrs May to “use all the power of her office to take immediate steps” to provide forms to polling stations.
The Prime Minister blamed the situation on “a decision by this House on 29 March not to agree a deal that would have made it unnecessary to hold European elections”.
