Dubious figures?

-

In your article “Scots urged to send Euro election message: We are open for business” (21 May), the First Minister is quoted as saying that the EU accounts for “more than half ” of Scottish exports. In fact, treating Scotland as an entity and including all exports to outside Scotland from Scotland, the total of Scotland’ s exports is over £80 billion pounds and the proportion going to the EU is around 18 per cent. These figures were published in The Scots man earlier this year. Even if you exclude exports to the rest of the UK (but why would you?), exports to the rest of the world including the US exceed exports to the EU. JONATHAN A DAVIDSON
