Lessons to be learned from cyclist’s lorry death
Calls for additional cycle lanes have been made following the “horrific” death of a cyclist who was hit by a lorry.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in Glasgow on Wednesday morning after the cyclist collided with a lorry at a busy crossroads.
The woman was riding on Pollokshaws Road, at the junction with Nithsdale Drive when she was struck at about 9.15am.
Police confirmed she died at the scene, but said the lorry driver was uninjured.
City councillors have now said more needs to be done to protect cyclists on Glasgow’s roads and “lessons must be learned”.
Green party councill or for Pollok shields, Jon Molyneux, said more needs to be done to improve the safety of Glasgow roads for ‘vulnerable’ cyclists.
Mr Molyneux said: “It’s a horrific incident. I actually try and avoid that stretch of road because you’ re particularly vulnerable as a cyclist along that stretch.”
He has written to George Gillespie, director of the neighbourhood sand sustainability department, Glasgow City Council, asking him to look into safety improvements.
Labour councillor for Glasgow south side, Soryia Siddique, said the incident “further emphasises the importance of road safety”.
She added: “I have asked Glasgow City Council to review all options.”
