25,000-plus fans set for Scots’ Hampden send-off
Scotland’ s World Cup sendoff game against Jamaica on Tuesday is expected to obliterate the record attendance for a women’s national team game in this country.
Nearly 25,000 tickets for the Hampden friendly have already been snapped up, with the turnstiles also open for business on the evening of the match.
The previous record crowd for a Scotland women’s game is 4,098. That was for the World Cup qualifier against Switzerland at the Simple Digital Arena in Paisley nine months ago.
The 2-1 win, courtesy of goals in the opening six minutes from Erin Cuthbert and Kim Little, was pivotal in taking Scotland to their first World Cup in France next month.
According to the Scottish FA, more than 20,000 tickets have been distributed via women’ s clubs, soccer centres and schools. A further 3,500 have been sold through SFA channels. Scotland head coach Shelley Kerr said: “Playing in front of an unprecedented crowd is what the players and the team deserve for their success of getting to the World Cup. It would be a real watershed moment for the women’ s game in Scotland.”
Prior to the Switzerland qualifier, the record crowd for a Scotland game was 4,058 at a Euro 2013 play- off game against Spain – the only pre - vious occasion the women’s team has played at the national stadium.
The game finished 1-1, with Arsenal’s Little again on the scoresheet. Scotland lost the away leg 3-2 after extra time, but qualified for their first championship at Euro 2017.
