Norris prefers Top Golf to millionaire lifestyle in Monaco

- By PHILIP DUNCAN By WILLIAM DICK

British teenager Lando Norris says only a big payday would lure him to Monaco’s millionaire paradise – insisting he would rather play Top Golf with his friends in Guildford.

The 19 - year- old Mclaren driver will compete in his first Formula 1 race on the streets of Monte Carlo on Sunday f ol l owing an encouraging start to his grand prix career.

But Norris, born i n S omerset, has no plans to follow in the footsteps of predecessors, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and David Coulthard by swapping Britain for the tax haven. Doing so would involve giving up afternoons at Top Golf – an informal driving range where accuracy and distance are rewarded with points. “If it saves money I guess it is something I would have to consider, but I am far from earning £ 30million,” said Norris, whose salary is yet to reach seven figures.

“A lot of the drivers here earn a decent amount of money and that is the benefit of living in Monaco.

“But the environment does not get me excited. None of my friends are here, so I wouldn’t know many people. It is not as open and free as where I live in Guildford, too.

“Back home, I can go to the Mclaren factory in Woking, I can have fun with my mates. Here, I don’t know what I would do. I played Top Golf the other day. I am not any good at it, but I can go and have fun, and that is not something I would necessarily be able to do in Monaco.” With f our sides boasting 100 per cent records, something must give when two of them, Prestwick and West of Scotland, clash at Henry Thow Oval this afternoon.

Prestwick, under the new captaincy of Tom Fleet, have already shown glimpses of the form which saw them crowned champions t wo years ago but they will not underestimate a West team who have t hree i mpressive wins of their own and are going to be a force to be reckoned with following the arrival of South African Rory Kleinveldt.

Fleet and counterpart Ian Young expect a stern examination of their teams’ credentials, the former saying: “It’s a great fixture for both clubs to measure where they are at this stage of the season. It’s exciting to test ourselves against a class player such as Kleinveldt and the boys are looking forward to it.”

West skipper Young added: “Prestwick will be a big test for us and it should be a great game with both teams having 100 per cent records.”

Elsewhere, fellow high- fliers Uddingston make the short trip to Torrance House t o f ace an East Kilbride team still targeting a first league win. Qasim Sheikh’s men, though, will be in high spirits after a hard- fought Mcculloch Cup midweek success against Drumpellier.

Clydesdale share top spot with the other three and they start favourites when they face a Greenock side anxious to break their duck.

Like Greenock, Poloc are aiming to kickstart their season, though the Shawholm team face a tough test when they head to Paisley to face Ferguslie. Stirling also have the chance to record their first win against Drumpellier at New Williamfield.
