Flynn confident Saints’ momentum will help them finish the job in home leg

- By EUAN MCARTHUR

St Mirren remain convinced they can preserve their Ladbrokes Premiership status by seeing off Championship hopefuls Dundee United tomorrow.

Midfielder Ryan Flynn was an important member of Oran Kearney’s side which kept United at bay in Thursday’s first leg, to leave the Paisley side slight favourites to prevail overall and maintain their place in the top flight. The 30- year- old Flynn, who began his youth career at Liverpool, is relishing tomorrow’s defining 90 minutes and is as bullish as ever about their prospects of staying up.

He said: “It’s a one- off game now. This is a cup final for both teams.

“Both teams are good going forward so it will open up in the second game.

“We frustrated United the other night. We only gave them a few chance sand that was it. We are confident we’ll be able to do the job at home now.

“Play-offs are big games with a lot of atmosphere so you have to handle them properly. You have to play your game and not the occasion. I think we handled United at Tannadice. We kept their fans quiet when they were trying to get behind them. I felt we took the sting out of the game at the right times.

“We’re in good form. Usually the team who is in the play- off from the Premiership is one that is out of form but we don’t feel like that. We have momentum. We are up for it and we just can’t wait for Sunday now.”

Saints stretched their unbeaten run to seven games by drawing at Tannadice and know United will now have to withstand the pressure of the home support who are expected to pack out their ground tomorrow.

Flynn added: “You expect it to be nervy at times but I felt we got the ball and played some good stuff at times. We always felt we could score at Tannadice and we had chances. We limited them to flashing a few balls across goal.

“It was two teams going at it. It was a difficult game and we move on now.

“United’s f ans were right behind t hem and I ’m sure our supporters will be right behind us on Sunday in the same way.”
